Originally appearing in the underground/alternative manga magazine Garo in the 1980s and adapted for television several times, the Japanese pop culture sensation Minami's Lover is the story of two high schoolers' romantic relationship when one of them shrinks down to six inches tall. Everyone thinks Chiyomi has disappeared, and suspicion naturally falls on Minami, identified as her boyfriend in her diary. But after inexplicably finding herself in such a state, Chiyomi moves in with him. As depicted in Uchida's clean, loose line and Zip-a-Tone textures, the two soon adapt to the unusual circumstances, devising ways for Chiyomi to use the toilet, brush her teeth and hair, attend classes, and more. After some silly sequences of trial and error, they even figure out a sex life. But in addition to learning how to navigate logistics, jealousy, and the cat, they're also growing up (if not taller). In 1955, Gene Deitch embarked on a daily comic strip for United Features Syndicate that he hoped would become his life's work. One of the most unusual strips of the decade, Terr'ble Thompson was about a very odd little boy who had his "Werld Hedd Quarters" in a tree house and was regarded far and wide as "the bravest, fiercest, most-best hero of all-time."
Less than a year into the strip, Deitch received an offer he couldn't refuse: to become head supervisor for Paul Terry's Terrytoons Studios, and Terr'ble Thompson was abandoned. For the very popular live-action kid show Captain Kangaroo, Deitch created a daily five-minute cartoon serial. Its central character was an invincible champion of justice, and he shared more than just the same initials as his comic strip predecessor. Tom Terrific, aided by Mighty Manfred the Wonder Dog, had a much longer and more memorable career than poor Terr'ble (as did Deitch himself, who continues his Oscar Award-winning career in animation over 50 years later).
Terr'ble Thompson collects the entirety of Deitch's short-lived inspiration for Tom Terrific, and a new generation will discover what could have been one of the great comic strips of all-time had it continued. The strip is drawn in a simple, modernist style that served as an antidote to the ubiquitous Disney look that had spread into all facets of popular culture. Terr'ble Thompson was a visual and verbal feast of fun that blended time and space, with Terr'ble going on adventures with great historic figures like Columbus, George Washington, and Davy Crockett.
This collection features annotations for the entire run of the strip by Deitch himself, as well as introductory essays by Deitch, his son Kim (also a renowned cartoonist), and historian Dan Nadel (The Ganzfeld). The book collects both the dailies and Sundays, with many of the latter newly recolored by Deitch (who was always unhappy with the inferior color processing of 1950s newspaper technology) for this book.

Hard-edged horror from hot young cartoonist.
Graphic novelist Josh Simmons (House) returns with a harrowing and genre-bending collection of modern horror short stories that could curl the toes of a corpse in a state of rigor mortis. Over the past 20 years, as Peter Bagge worked on his "Buddy Bradley" stories and other graphic novels, he also cranked out dozens of shorter stories, which are now collected here. Included are one-off gags and short stories as well as a series of Bagge-written stories drawn by other cartoonists, such as Daniel Clowes, Adrian Tomine, R. Crumb, Johnny Ryan, the Hernandez Brothers and Danny Hellman plus the hilarious "Kool-Aid Man" written by Alan Moore and drawn by Bagge. In this Italian erotic comics collection, which spans 1977 - 1989, the character Valentina, a music, art, and fashion-loving Milanese photographer, ages in "real time." First, she saves Effi, a German heiress, from kidnappers, and they become lovers. Valentina also has an affair with Bruno, a young cellist. Dangerous Liaisons follows our heroine into middle-aged home life with her longtime partner, Phil, with whom she has a grown son, Mattia. In 1952, the death of Evita, "The Spiritual Leader of the Nation," at the age of 33, devastated the Argentine people - children, the poor, and women- that she had tirelessly advocated for as the First Lady. She has since become an international icon, inspiring many works such as Andrew Lloyd Webber's and Tim Rice's 1976 Broadway musical, Evita.
Published in 1970, writer Hector Germán Oesterheld and the father and son illustration team of Alberto and Enrique Breccia intended Evita: The Life and Work of Eva Perón to be the follow-up to the successful and controversial 1969 graphic biography Life of Che. But the script was taken away from him and depoliticized by another writer. In 2002, a restored, revised, and updated version of Evita, featuring Oesterheld's original script, which takes a uniquely symbolic approach to her life and career, was finally published in Argentina. Thirty-three of Sgt. Rock cartoonist Joe Kubert's crime and horror comics, collected in one volume.
Joe Kubert sealed his reputation as one of the greatest American comic-book cartoonists of all time with the four-color adventures of Sgt. Rock of Easy Company, Enemy Ace, and Tarzan, all done for DC Comics during the 1960s and 1970s (themselves already the subject of archival editions)... but he had been working in comics since the 1940s. In fact, young Kubert produced an exciting, significant body of work as a freelance artist for a variety of comic book publishers in the postwar era, in a glorious variety of non-super hero genres: horror, crime, science fiction, western, romance, humor, and more. A career-spanning collection from the heir to Hergé.
By appropriating and subverting Tintin creator Hergé's classic "clear line" style, Joost Swarte revitalized European alternative comics in the 1970s with a series of satirical, musically elegant, supremely beautifully drawn short stories - often featuring his innocent, magnificently-quiffed Jopo de Pojo, or his orotund scientist character, Anton Makassar.
Under Swarte's own exacting supervision, Is That All There Is? will collect virtually all of his alternative comics work from 1972 to date, including the RAW magazine stories that brought him fame among American comics aficionados in the 1980s.
